These rhopalomeris carnifex 'lipstick' were my first attempt at keeping and rearing pill millipedes, and so far I am very proud to say they have thrived. It took about two years of research, a couple of suggestions from other pill millipede breeders, and a lot of fear on my part, but they seem to be thriving so far as not only have they survived but the 10 I started with have produced probably around 30 babies from what I can see. I have owned these individuals for a year and recently (about three months ago) got some rhoplameris carnifex 'strawberry' with the first set of babies just starting to hatch.
I was advised to try flake soil as a main substrate which has seemed to help but the biggest change compared to traditional care is the swapping of oak, beech, and other tough leaves for something that decays quickly such as elm, ash, and hazel. These leaves have shown increased palatability for both rhopalomeris groups that I currently own and I do hope to attempt a larger species once I can find a source for them.
I am also hoping to invest in some more accurate thermometers and hygrometers so that I can record what I am having success with as the best parameters I currently have is room temperature...
I hope that I can raise all these babies to adulthood and supply people with truly captive bred species and keep developing their care so that they thrive in captivity.
Please let me know if there is anything you would like to know or see regarding these awesome critters!
